SAN DIEGO CHAPTER MEETING
The San Diego Chapter had their first meeting of 2011 on Saturday, the 29th of January in the home of the Inland Reillys (Karen and Pat). The opening reflection was a shared reading of the aspirations of the Maryknoll Affiliates movement.
Of special note was the first time attendance of Sister Paula Smith, Medical Missionaries of Mary. Sr. Paula spent time in Africa and the past few years has lived in Tijuana, Mexico and now is just across the border in San Isidro. She shared with us the challenges she and all sisters are facing in getting Mission Church dates.
Our regulars were there, Bob Metzger, Jim DeHarpporte, our hosts, Michele Dunne, Erin (not pictured), Spencer Rickwa, Peggy, Joe Santos (not pictured), Charlie and Marta Reilly (Coastal Reillys) and Sr. Paula. See photo.
As we introduced ourselves to Sr. Paula, some Affiliates took the opportunity to report on their latest activities. Charlie continues striving for Peace and Justice starting the new semester as a Professor at the University of San Diego, Marta works with the Migrant Ministry at her parish and this past Christmas, the parish delivered personalized food baskets to local families. Marta and Charlie plan to attend the September Centennial celebration in Maryknoll.
Bob had his hip surgery postponed, but now is scheduled for February 1st, so please keep him in your prayers.
Erin and Spencer have obtained a tentative OK from the IRS for their 501(c)(3) organization. This will allow them to accept tax free donations in anticipation of their mission service in Bolivia starting next year. They are also in the process of selling their house. Their program is “Bridges to Healing, Health Care for Orphans”. Check out their web site at www.bridgestohealing.org.
Jim reported on his recent trip to India visiting CRS projects there. He had the opportunity to reunite with many of the folks with whom he worked some 30 years ago. Everyone was impressed with his account of having a few hours break during the trip to visit the GREAT WALL of China. This was a source of much kidding and fun, as most of the other Affiliates had to point out that they had not been there!
Joe reported on the activities of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter. They have a new member, Deacon Leonel Yoque, the new assistant at the Maryknoll Office in Little Tokyo. Joe noted that the Greater Bay Area Chapter has restarted. Everyone was invited to attend the Affiliate Conference to be held June 23 to 26, 2011 at Stony Point Center, including a day at Maryknoll on June 24.
Food and drinks were available to enhance the social interaction before and after the meeting. Our next meeting will be in Santa Ana in Orange County at La Casa de los Santos on March 12, 2011 at 12 noon. All are welcome.
