The Vocation of Prophetic People

E-mail Print PDF

Hope has two beautiful daughters;
Their names are Anger and Courage
Anger at the way things are,
And Courage to see that they do nothave to remain as they are.

-St. Augustine

Jesus with Mary and MartaWe live in two worlds, one world is the world of following Jesus and the other world is the world of being a member of a nation. We would love for the two worlds to match up perfectly. Sometimes there is overlap and often times, not. In fact, many try to force the issue and make that happen by declaring that our nation is ordained by God to do God’s work and thus we are an exceptional nation in the world. The air seems filled today with truths and absolutes, lots of litmus tests for sure.

Regional Model Affirmed at Joint Meeting April 2012

E-mail Print PDF

At this weekend's joint meeting, the Affiliate Board, in consensus with the Regional Coordinators, agreed to accept the recommendations of the EMEC and affirm the Affiliate Regional Model! As you know, the Affiliates have been engaged in an experimental period dedicated to developing more regionally-based Affiliate connections and strengthening our experience as small mission communities. The Experimental Model Evaluation Committee (EMEC) gathered broad input on the experience of the model, seeking feedback from the Regional Coordinators themselves, Affiliates participating at last summer's MAC 2011 Conference and Affiliates in Chapters through a reflective questioning, heart sharing process. The model of evaluation utilized was that of Appreciative Inquiry. Some learning highlights of the evaluation report include:

  • Development of a regional identity has been very varied. While the regional 'identity' is manifesting itself in a widely variable, uneven and haltering way, it is emerging.
  • There is a creative tension in the Affiliates between local/ Chapter identity and interest in the international life of the movement that influences our communication.
  • Several emerging themes or "dreams" surfaced including community, Maryknoll connection, spirituality, communication, formation of chapters, youth, increasing diversity, global vision and action.

Not So Far Afield Vol 21 No 1 – March/April 2012

E-mail Print PDF

Our Maryknoll Brothers

They may be religious Brothers in Maryknoll, but as you can read in this edition of Not So Far Afield, these men who have served in mission and are often a humble presence in the Maryknoll family are really like siblings to so many of us. They have often welcomed us to serve with them in mission, whether that be for a few weeks or a few months, and welcomed us to their “Maryknoll homes” in New York, Seattle and elsewhere. In turn, we have been happy to open our Maryknoll Affiliate Chapters to these same brothers. All we can do, as has been expressed in all these articles, is be grateful for this connection and friendship.

On another note, you may have noticed that there was no Not So Far Afield for January and February. Perhaps because of the holidays, we did not have enough articles for a full issue. We are including here the articles we did receive that touched on the theme “Option for the Poor.” So, consider this a combined issue for the start of 2012.
