Keep the Advocacy Alive for a Faithful Federal Budget!

Beginning Friday, March 23 through Monday, March 26, nearly 1,000 Christians took part in the 2012 Ecumenical Advocacy Days for Global Peace with Justice in Washington, D.C. This year's 10th Anniversary gathering was titled, "Is THIS the Fast I Seek? Economy, Livelihood and Our National Priorities." Ecumenical Advocacy Days is a movement of the ecumenical Christian community, and its recognized partners and allies, to strengthen Christian voices and to mobilize for advocacy on a wide variety of U.S. domestic and international policy issues.

The highlight of the three-day gathering was the release of a faithful federal budget. "The Faithful Budget" promotes comprehensive and compassionate budget principles that will "protect the common good, values each individual and his or her livelihood, and helps lift the burden on the poor, rather than increasing it while shielding the wealthiest from any additional sacrifice."

On March 7, in celebration of International Women's Day, photos of some of us who spent the previous two weeks attending the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN. This event attracts thousands of attendees from around the world and is to say the least an exciting period. This year the theme was "Empower Rural Women--End Hunger and Poverty" and generated 20-30 parallel events everyday so NGOs could attend and gain a wide variety of information on how women around the world subsist in a not so kind world.

The following press release comes from the US Catholic Mission Association:

USCMA Logo

Dear USCMA Members,

One thing I promised myself to do as Executive Director was, when possible, to refresh our collective memory concerning the Resolutions we had taken over the years at our Annual meetings. We will shortly have an occasion to "walk the walk" concerning the Resolution taken in Miami about "Human Trafficking." Two days from now, Wednesday, January 11, 2012 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the U.S., thanks to passage of a resolution by the Senate on June 22, 2007 making January 11th a day of awareness and vigilance for the countless victims of Human Trafficking around the world. The Resolution we, Members of the USCMA, passed is the following:

Resolution:

Be it resolved that we, as members of the United States Catholic Mission Association (USCMA) in association with the Franciscan Federation and the Franciscan Action Network, upholding the inherent dignity of each human person in the tradition of St. Francis and St Clare of Assisi, denounce all forms of human trafficking as criminal acts that violate basic human rights and exploit innocent people. We pledge to work for the elimination of human trafficking and its causes; to advocate for rescue, safety, and justice for trafficked persons; and to demand prosecution of perpetrators.
