Maryknoll calls for end to nuclear energy;
Urges world leaders to address grave threats to human life

Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns LogoAs the world prepares to mark the first anniversary of the tragic tsunami and nuclear accident in Japan, Maryknoll missioners convey their continued sympathy for all those directly impacted by the disaster, and present a new statement that expresses their deep reservations about the continued reliance on the use of nuclear power and the development of nuclear weapons.

Washington, D.C.: In a new statement released today, Maryknoll addresses a range of threats posed by nuclear power and urges political leaders to reject the cultivation and use of nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuel. "We believe that the radiation and proliferation hazards endemic to nuclear energy production breach the safety and security of human life and endanger the integrity of creation," the statement reads.

E-mail Print PDF

OGC LogoWe are please to let you know that, after a discussion with Interim Director Kathy McNeely and Jim Noonan MM, associate for Asia and disarmament, of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (MOGC), the Office for Global Concerns will begin a new outreach efforts to the Maryknoll Affiliates. Jim will be contacting Maryknoll Affiliate Chapters in the form of phone calls and visits to encourage Affiliate participation at "Maryknoll on the Hill", which will take place from May 15-16, 2012, and to establish ongoing relationships.

When he visits a Chapter, Jim envisions a session of about 1 to 1½ hours that would include a personal invitation to "Maryknoll on the Hill", a listening session, an overview of the work of the Office and time for discussion, questions and answers.

The MOGC addresses issues raised by Maryknollers overseas and Justice and Peace Commissions of dioceses. The MOGC does not have the capacity to address all issues, but Kathy and Jim hope to continue building and strengthening partnerships between Affiliates and the Office, and enhancing the Maryknoll network.

Contact us if you have any questions.
