Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (MOGC) stands in solidarity with Muslims
The MOGC prepared and circulated the statement below in response to the public debate about the proposed Islamic center in Manhattan and the proposed "burn a Koran" event. We are relieved that the organizer of the proposed book burning has said it will not occur; we continue to pray for those involved with decisions about the Islamic center, that they enter into negoatiations with open hearts and minds.
September 2010 -- Around the world, Maryknoll missioners engage with people from many cultures and communities. For decades, Maryknollers have experienced hospitality and welcome from diverse societies, from people whose faith traditions and ethnic norms are quite unlike the ones we know in the United States. This has given us a sense of the deep connection between all humans, that we are truly more similar than different.
We are shaken and saddened by the fear and animosity shown toward the proposed Cordoba House community center to be erected in Manhattan. The misinformation and distorted thinking that have circulated around this issue are detriments to true reconciliation and understanding.
We are especially concerned about a planned action to burn the Koran on September 11 in protest of the community center. This is a tragic and twisted reaction, based in fear, that only destroys our human connections. Islam is not our enemy; Muslims are not our enemy.
Faith in action:

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, a group of Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders gathered at the National Press Club (Washington, D.C.) "to discuss how their religions can work together to combat what they call 'an atmosphere of fear and intolerance' toward Islam." A one-hour video from C-SPAN of this meeting is available here.
