Sr. Rose Marie Cecchini, MM, from Stockton, CA, served in Asia for thirty-three years, in Japan, the Philippines and Nepal, before coming to the Southwest in 1996.
Sr. Rose Marie is coordinator of the Office of Life, Peace, Justice and Creation Stewardship under the auspices of Catholic Charities of Gallup Diocese, which promotes Gospel-based responses and activities addressing peace, justice and ecological issues of concern.
As a member of Native American solidarity groups in New Mexico, Sr. Rose Marie collaborates with Navajo and Pueblo Peoples who continue to suffer from uranium radiation exposure-related illnesses and environmental contamination of lands, water and air from past decades of uranium mining, never remediated by responsible federal agencies and mining corporations. In this capacity, she also collaborates with Navajo communities in a movement to prevent insitu leach uranium mining projects in Church Rock and Crownpoint, NM, that will irreversibly contaminate the sole source drinking water aquifer for over 15,000 people in these communities.
She earned a B.A. in Sociology from Maryknoll College in the Philippines; an M.A. in Eastern Studies from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan; a Ph.D. in Literature from the Institute of International Relations, Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan.
