At this weekend's joint meeting, the Affiliate Board, in consensus with the Regional Coordinators, agreed to accept the recommendations of the EMEC and affirm the Affiliate Regional Model! As you know, the Affiliates have been engaged in an experimental period dedicated to developing more regionally-based Affiliate connections and strengthening our experience as small mission communities. The Experimental Model Evaluation Committee (EMEC) gathered broad input on the experience of the model, seeking feedback from the Regional Coordinators themselves, Affiliates participating at last summer's MAC 2011 Conference and Affiliates in Chapters through a reflective questioning, heart sharing process. The model of evaluation utilized was that of Appreciative Inquiry. Some learning highlights of the evaluation report include:
- Development of a regional identity has been very varied. While the regional 'identity' is manifesting itself in a widely variable, uneven and haltering way, it is emerging.
- There is a creative tension in the Affiliates between local/ Chapter identity and interest in the international life of the movement that influences our communication.
- Several emerging themes or "dreams" surfaced including community, Maryknoll connection, spirituality, communication, formation of chapters, youth, increasing diversity, global vision and action.

It may still be winter out there, but there is a warming trend in Affiliate Finances. Three months into this year's funding cycle over $8,000 has been raised, which is about 30% of our $24,500 goal. First, thank you to all of you who have already contributed and for those who have tucked away the appeal information in a secure place-please don't forget where that place is!
You may remember that last year we met our appeal goal of $18,500, and reaching that goal was mainly made possible by more of us "Stepping up to the Plate." This year we are looking for even greater Affiliate participation. To put it in perspective, if 50% of Affiliates are active contributors our financial goals should be met. It will be great to see the thermometer signaling an early spring and to have reached goal and be able to enjoy summer.
If you don't remember the secure place where you tucked away the appeal letter, you can download the appeal letter here and download the reply form here.

The Affiliate Board at their Fall 2011 meeting set the date for the next Maryknoll Affiliate International Conference for 2014. This decision was made considering the input from MAC 2011 participants. The venue will be in proximity to Maryknoll so that the traditional "Day at Maryknoll" is possible along with providing an opportunity for Maryknollers to attend and contribute to the richness of these Conferences.

The following was in Ann Carr's Advent Greetings, but because of this part being after the "Read more", you may have missed these priorities for 2012. Because of the importance of sharing these priorities, we are publishing them again.
As we begin to plan for 2012, we have identified 5 priority areas for the upcoming year. We would like to share these with you here and invite your comments and input:
- Completing evaluation of the Experimental Model: EMEC Committee is currently reviewing Chapter feedback from the Appreciative Inquiry process and will present an evaluation summary at the joint meeting of the Board and Regional Coordinators April 2012.
- Search for a new Executive Coordinator: A search committee have been formed and is currently working on job description, search and recruitment planning, etc anticipating Fred Goddard's departure in August 2012
- Hispanic/International Outreach: As the Hispanic presence in the US church continues to grow, outreach to Latinos will be an important priority for the part of the Affiliate movement based in the US. (Affiliates were recently invited to a meeting with the other Maryknoll expressions to discuss how we might work together.) For our Affiliate movement as a whole, however, we are increasingly aware of our growing international qualities. As the global nature of the Affiliates continues to broaden and deepen, we will need to search for ways by which we can truly become an integrated and international movement.
- Youth Outreach: Currently there are three Maryknoll Affiliate Youth Clubs that are a part of our wider community. They offer an exciting experiment and slightly different model of being Affiliates and we hope that we can continue to learn from their experience with us. Also, we hope that we can continue to develop a variety of ways in which we will connect with younger people.
- Broader Collaboration: As the diversity and complexity of our world grows, we believe that the Affiliates can be strengthened and enriched by reaching out to work together with other groups. Perhaps we might learn from the Occupy movement who in their recent NYC General Assembly stated: "We, the people, acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members...As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies."
Please do offer your comments, suggestions and insights on any and all of the above. Our Affiliate Board truly hopes that we are journeying together with the many small mission communities that make up this wonderful movement and wish to truly carry out our work in a spirit of servant-leadership.
