MARYKNOLL'S ORBIS BOOKS, MARYKNOLL MAGAZINE AND REVISTA MARYKNOLL HONORED BY PEERS
MARYKNOLL, N.Y. - For the third year in a row Maryknoll's publishing arm, Orbis Books, surpassed all other Catholic publishers in the number of awards received from the Catholic Press Association (CPA). Orbis was presented with an impressive 12 awards, including four first place citations, during the 2009 Catholic Media Convocation held in Anaheim, Calif., sharing honors with Maryknoll's magazines which took an additional nine awards.
"Our award-winning books range from a response to the problem of unbelief, a call to find our true vocation, and a guide to the liberating message of scripture, to a meditation on the assassination of JFK, a window on the fate of child soldiers, and a response to domestic violence.
"These books may not become bestsellers. But they are books that matter, and it is wonderful, in receiving so many awards in so many categories, to see that recognized by the Catholic Press Association," said Robert Ellsberg, publisher and executive director of Orbis Books.
MARYKNOLL magazine took seven awards in the mission magazine category, including first place awards for general excellence, best feature article, best single color photo and best personality profile. Other winning categories were best cover, best essay and best regular column.
Revista Maryknoll, the Spanish-language magazine founded to serve the ever burgeoning, diverse communities of Hispanic Catholics in the United States, received two first place awards in the categories of best feature story and best cover.
"The staff of MARYKNOLL and REVISTA Maryknoll is pleased and honored to be recognized by the Catholic Press Association with a total of nine awards," said Linda Unger, senior editor of the two magazines. "Our greatest satisfaction is to share the story of mission and of Maryknoll with U.S. Catholics in the hope these pages may inspire many Catholics to discover their own mission vocation, whether overseas or here at home."
