Criminal Justice Reforms

E-mail Print PDF

Prior International CURE Conferences, in New York, Geneva, and Abuja, have highlighted human rights and criminal justice problems and opportunities in five areas:

  1. Judicial Operations
  2. Alternatives to Incarceration
  3. Systemic Violence and Abuse of Incarcerated Persons
  4. Prisoner Health
  5. Rehabilitation and Reentry

The 6th International CURE Conference on human Rights and Criminal Justice Reform will be held on January 19-22, 2013, in New Delhi, India. This, then, is the opportunity for advocates in six continents to raise their voices in concert with many others, and to highlight problems and opportunities prevalent in many countries. It is a once-in-a decade chance to join voices from a hundred countries for human rights and criminal justice reform. We therefore urge you to consider:

  1. Presenting your own views, based on your knowledge of conditions in your country, in a paper delivered at the Conference.
  2. Recommending that knowledgeable friends and associates do likewise.
  3. Sending us the names (and email addresses) of advocates that you know, to whom we can send an invitation to so present.

As with previous CURE Conferences, all papers presented at the New Delhi Conference will be posted on the International CURE website www.internationalcure.org . Papers in this conference will also be discussed in the International CURE Blog at justiceworldwide.wordpress.com/ These, therefore will become part of the worldwide platform for criminal justice reform.

Can we count on you to consider these three steps?

Pre Trial Detention Video

We had a presentation of a video on Pre Trial Detention, at the regular February 2012 meeting of the Westchester chapter of the Maryknoll Affiliates. The video describes the years of unjust detention in many countries, and some solutions to the problem. The discussion was very spirited. A DVD containing that video can be obtained by other Affiliate chapters from Rudy Cypser.

Cypsers Acknowledged in America Magazine

E-mail Print PDF

Rudy and Betty Cypser were recently mentioned in a letter to the editor in America. Rev. Theodore Parker from Detroit wrote in a letter titled Visiting the Prisoners:

From 1982 to 1991 I was the Catholic chaplain at Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon, N.Y. During those years I had the assistance of bright, capable lay men and women from St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls; St Columba’s in Hopewell Junction; and the great support of a dynamic couple who have made criminal justice their life’s work, Mr. and Mrs. Cypser of Katonah. The Cursillo movement inspired them to minister, and I am grateful to these men and women for their selfless ministry to men and women in prison.

Without their assistance, no doubt the ministry at Fishkill would have been very much diminished. They made it possible for us to have three Residents Encounter Christ retreats each year for nine years. It was a time of great grace for me, as well. I thank Mrs. Schultz for reminding me of those great years when I had the God-given opportunity to devote my younger life in ministry to those men in great need.

You can read the entire letter in the August 2-9, 2010 issue of America.
