Welcome to the Seattle Chapter Webpage

The Seattle Chapter meets at the Maryknoll Development House, 958 16th Ave East, Seattle 98112, on the south east corner of East Prospect Street and 16th Ave East.on the second Saturday of each month except December, and the summer months of June, July and August at 10 AM.

What brings our Seattle Affiliates to a meeting each month? Contact with good people, hearing talks and stories from the missions, getting grounded, being with our community, hearing about local volunteer opportunities and upcoming activities on human rights and social justice. Since we don't work on many projects together as a group, the meeting is the time for us to tell about what each of us are doing for social justice and mission support.

Our meeting usually consist of a "business " portion where we each talk about what we are doing locally to support mission and related work. We also have announcements about upcoming volunteer opportunities. We listen to a speaker talk about their short term mission or related volunteer work, locally or foreign.

I participated along with about 20 others in an immigration vigil at the Tacoma Detention Center after our Affiliates meeting on April 14. We stood as witnesses to the deeds (and misdeeds) of the staff at this "prison for profit" and showed our solidarity to the families and friends visiting their incarcerated loved ones by our hospitality and listening to their stories.

The vigils are held the second Saturday of each month at the ICE Northwest Detention Center, 1623 East J St, Tacoma from noon to 3 PM sponsored by the Washington Sanctuary Movement and a number of other organizations. Please go to their website www.washingtonsanctuary.webs.com for more information. A special Mothers Day vigil will be held Saturday May 12 and all are welcome.

Kitty and Roger in Tanzania

Kitty and I have been home in Lacey, Washington for nearly a month. The following pictures depict somewhat the experiences we have in Tanzania. A Maryknoll father was asked, "What should you do when you go to mission?" He said, "Do what gives you joy." I hope you can see in the following pictures what gives us joy. "Why it's almost like being in love. That can happen to you in Africa.

Dec. 21, 2011

We have had a very successful 3 weeks with the 15-17 school-age orphans. They have had math and English practice, singing and reading every day for 2-3 hours. We all enjoy the lessons and laugh a lot. Every night they come to our room to exchange reading story books to take with them to bed.

Since we were here last year some things at the orphanage have changed. The kids who attend primary school have moved to the dorms becaus the school is now a boarding school for the primary grades as well as the middle grades. This leaves only the smallest children "home" during the morning on school days. The children old enough for preschool come to the preschool in the mornings and return to the orphanage at lunchtime and remain there the rest of the day playing, eating and laughing.

We thought you might be interested in what we are doing to celebrate 100 years of Maryknoll and their presence in Seattle. Roger and I were part of a feature on Maryknoll in our local diocesan newspaper recently and the articles may interest you about us and about Maryknoll in Seattle.
