Although we are already 37 days into 2012 and the Year of the Dragon has begun, it is never too late to make plans. I hope you are planning Affiliate chapter meetings for the coming months. Each chapter does it differently. The Greater Los Angeles chapter, for example, sets aside the first Saturday of each month for their meetings. In this way, a consistent schedule is maintained for the year. The Affiliates know the dates of the meetings even though all the details of each meeting may not be fully planned months ahead. Sharing your activities on your chapter webpage or submitting to the Affiliate website gives other Affiliates and chapters ideas for their chapter activities. The Affiliates website gives news about current chapters and also new chapters being formed.

Lazarus, Come Forth book coverLong time peace activist, Father John Dear offers a compelling new reading of the story of Lazarus, which calls us all to pursue a life of peace.

Fr. John will lead a two hour book study of John 11, the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead, suggesting that Lazarus represents "humanity" stuck in the culture of death and Jesus represents "the God of Life".

If Lazarus represents humanity, the story of his raising is about the God of Life confronting the power of death itself, calling humanity to walk out of its tomb—the culture of violence and war—and into "the new life of resurrection peace."

John Dear S.J.

John Dear, S.J., is a Jesuit priest and peace activist whose many books include Living Peace: A Spirituality of Contemplation and Action (Image, 2004) and The Questions of Jesus (Image 2004). His Orbis titles include You Will Be My Witnesses (2006), and, as editor, Mohandas Gandhi: Essential Writings (2002) and Daniel Berrigan: Essential Writings (2010). Dear writes a weekly online column for The National Catholic Reporter.

About 11 of us from the Greater LA Chapter attended a reception held by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers last night at the LA Religious Education Congress in Anaheim. The Hospitality Suite was full of Affiliates and friends from the Northwest, California and other parts of the world celebrating the 100 years of Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.

As you are aware, Peggy and I have been named the Regional Coordinators for the California Region of Maryknoll Affiliates Chapters. We are excited to again be closely involved in the evolution and growth of the Affiliates movement.

We want to also acknowledge the tremendous effort and hard work that Marta and Charlie Reilly have done as the initial Regional Coordinators under this continuing organizational experiment.  They are a tough act to follow.
