John Boehner meets the 'Golden Calf'

(This was originally from an email from Catholics United)

Catholics United members and Occupy DC brought the Golden Calf and the signatures of 8,000 Catholics United members to Speaker Boehner at the Capitol.Catholics United members and Occupy DC brought the Golden Calf and the signatures of 8,000 Catholics United members to Speaker Boehner at the Capitol.Yesterday (December 15), with the help of our friends from Occupy DC, Faith in Public Life, the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns and the Franciscan Action Network, Catholics United members hand-delivered the signatures of more than 8,000 Catholics United members from across the country to the Speaker of the House and fellow Catholic, John Boehner. We wanted to remind him that people of faith want Wall Street to share in the sacrifice that so many American families are being asked to make.

I was proud to be a part of yesterday's effort. We marched our 'Golden Calf' from McPherson Square to the House office building to help make sure that our voice was heard. And along the way we had more than 20 photographers and TV cameras covering our efforts.

I believe that it's time for Speaker Boehner to follow the social teachings of the Church and heed the advice of the Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI to support greater Wall Street accountability. As Congress debates ways to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and vulnerable, now is the time to make sure that Wall Street pays its fair share.

That was the message that we got across to the Speaker yesterday. With the help of the Golden Calf and the signatures of 8,000 Catholics United members like you, we are making a impact in our nation's moral values debate. Here are some of the media highlights from yesterday:

Washington Post: Boehner doesn't take bull from protesters

"We believe that Congress should consider taxing Wall Street banks and hedge funds if they are asking the American public to make historic cuts in Medicare and Medicaid, said James Salt, executive director of Catholics United."

AFP: Occupy groups takes 'golden calf' to US Congress

"Some 30 "Occupy DC" protesters took their anti-corporate demonstration to the corridors of the US Congress, toting a "golden calf" made from papier mache to symbolize lawmakers' subservience to moneyed interests."

Huffington Post: Protesters March Golden Bull To Capitol Hill, Pray For Higher Taxes At Boehner's Office

"Protesters also argued from a religious standpoint. They said that Boehner, a Roman Catholic, should heed the words of Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican, which have called for the redistribution of wealth."

Sincerely,

Jason and the rest of the Catholics United team
