The focus of our group as determined at last month gathering will be Prayer, Immigration, and partnering with Maryknollers in Bolivia. Our next gathering will determine how we want to address the issue of immigration in terms of Action, Advocacy, and Education. We are please with the new interest shown by new young prospective members.

We are also connecting with a local High School which has a Mission Club and has shown interest in partnering with the Maryknollers in Bolivia.

Simons Philippines update February 2010

We have had an eventful past two months. Amy had a case of dengue fever at the end of January, and was in the hospital for a few days for monitoring, as her platelets dropped significantly. Thankfully, all went well and there were no complications. Thank you to those of you who prayed for her during that time. We were grateful for our community of friends here as well, as they pitched in and watched the kids, stayed at the hospital with Amy and were generally supportive and encouraging during that time.

Dear Friends and Family,

Kids with grandma at a local bird sanctuary

Happy Fall and Halloween, hope you are enjoying the cooler weather!  We have had a particularly hot September/October, but today, we are enjoying cloudy skies, which makes it just a bit cooler.  Some of you were concerned about the recent typhoons that his the Philippines.  Here in Davao, we don’t experience them directly, but get a bit of rain out of the storms because trade winds carry them to the northern Philippines. We are really saddened by the destruction in Manila but we encouraged by the response of the communities here to send money, supplies, food, etc. for the relief efforts.

The past 3 weeks we have had visitors from out of the country.  Amy’s parents spent 1 ½ weeks with us which was a really lovely, encouraging time to show them our life here.  Then our regional supervisor from California spent another week for his periodic check in with us.  A lot of other things have happened in the past two months that we would like to share with you.

Denver Chapter Way of the Cross

We had a very successful Good Friday Way of the Cross walk through  downtown Denver. The Denver Maryknoll Affiliates took over the responsibility for leading this city-wide ecumenical event some 5+ years ago from the Diocese. Our Affiliate, Maureen Hand, originally led an effort to produce a stations booklet that Is very contemporary with today's justice and peace issues. We have the station readings correspond with specific municipal and private landmarks, such as, the city jail, veterans memorial, the World Bank building, and the Federal Court House (download a sample brochure).

We had over 100 participants with volunteers carrying a cross and driving a nail at each station. The experience "puts action" into the reflection for each station. Our main targets for participation are the J & P organizations  and organizers throughout the county, the catholic high schools, the Just Faith groups within a parish, and the known ecumenical organizations. We had special help by way of finances and volunteers from the Capital Hill United Ministries - a group of predominately Protestant churches focused on justice and peace issues.
We conclude the Walk with drinks in the community center of a downtown church.
