Formation and Renewal Program
In the November/December issue of Not So Far Afield, I wrote about our newly developing Formation/Renewal Program. Here are some additional details. Most of the materials are developed so that a group can facilitate its own process. We do have someone guide them through the opening and closing retreat.
While still in development, the planned sessions for Maryknoll Affiliate Formation for a potential Chapter are:
- Opening Retreat
- History of Maryknoll
- Charism, Mission, Vision of Maryknoll
- Affiliate History
- Meaning of Mission
- Four Pillars of the Maryknoll Affiliates
- Mission Spirituality
- Crossing Cultural Boundaries
- Catholic Social Teaching
- Ministries and action
- Practical aspects of an Affiliate Chapter
- Closing Retreat
We post any readings and videos that we can along with the session outline on our website as they are developed. As of this writing, you will find an outline for the opening retreat (though this will always vary with the group and the retreat director) and the Maryknoll History, Charism and Affiliate History sessions. The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns is working with us on developing the session on Catholic Social Teaching/Global Concerns.
After each session, the potential Chapter is asked to write something on our discussion forums on our website, usually in response to some questions that we provide. The Formation Committee can then review and respond to what they have written. Any Maryknoll Affiliate or Missioner is also welcome to view and respond to their postings.
How do I access the materials?
All the readings are posted on our website. You must be registered and logged in to view the formation/renewal materials. When you login, you will see a new menu item at the top and on the left for Formation/Renewal. DVDs of the videos are also available upon request. Materials that are not on the website will either be available for purchase or can be borrowed.
What can I get out of this?
Even though they are being developed for potential Chapters, existing Chapters may want to use them for their own formation/renewal. A Chapter can choose from the different sessions that are posted depending on their own need.
You should encourage people new to your Chapter to read the materials and watch the videos that are on line. Someone from the Chapter should accompany the person as they go through the sessions, responding to any questions and giving their own reflections. Individuals can post their own thoughts and comments on our website.
How can I help?
While we do have a Formation Committee, we are always looking for help in developing the materials, especially if you have an interest in any of the particular areas in the outline above. We would appreciate any feedback on the materials we post. Are they helpful? Do you have other suggested materials or resources? You can contact me by email or phone if you have any comments or suggestions.
