New York City Subway
Welcome to the New York City Subway Chapter Webpage
The New York City Subway Chapter meets from September to May, usually at the Maryknoll House on the third Sunday of each month.
Members of the Chapter support one another in their involvements locally and internationally. We gather for prayer and reflection—often exploring issues which impact the diverse cultures of New York City.

On Valentine's Day with my brother, Eric, and I left New York for Haiti. We had to spend the night in the Fort Lauderdale airport. The next morning, we boarded the plane for Port-au-Prince where we were met at the airport by the faithful driver of the hostel, Matthew 25, where we were staying. On landing in Port-au-Prince I noticed that the tent cities around the airport have diminished in numbers since I had seen them a year before. However, the roads have not improved nor have the crowds diminished.

The New York City Subway Chapter had their annual Christmas Party on December 16. Once again, Margaret Meehan proved to be the quitessential host, with a wonderful meal and a warm home. We are so grateful to her and to Tim Monaghan, our ever-present cook, and Margaret's right-hand man at these parties.

On Sunday, April 17, the New York City Subway Chapter gathered at the Maryknoll Sisters, Maryknoll, NY, so they Sister Joan Peltier MM could be part of their meeting. At this meeting, the Chapter blessed and "sent" Rick Dixon, who will be joining the Maryknoll Lay Missioners this fall and will likely be going to Latin America.

The New York City Subway Chapter came together for our first meeting of the year in Chinatown where we gathered for a wonderful lunch at the ABC Chinese Restaurant. It was a special gathering place as that was the last place where we were all together with Paul D'Arcy.
That was just the beginning of our time together. We then all walked over to Transfiguration Parish for a memorial mass celebrated by Maryknoll Father Ray Nobelletti MM. Transfiguration parish is just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center, so it was a significant place to be that day. Ray Nobelletti was a first reponder that day (see the article about that here). Father Ed Szendry MM helped concelebrate the mass.
You can see pictures of the day on our Facebook page.

December 30 through January 3
After my August trip to Haiti, I hoped to return during the Christmas/New Year's break. Due to our New York blizzard of December, I was unable to leave on the 27th as scheduled. I travelled on the 30thinstead. I was met at the airport of Port-au-Prince by a driver from "Mathew 25" a house of hospitality accommodating over 30 people. It was established in 2005 by the parish twinning program of the Americas. It provides assistance to North Americans visiting their twinning parishes.
