Contact the Chapter

The Philadelphia Area Maryknoll Affiliates gather every four weeks on Sunday afternoon at the Sisters of Mercy Congregation Center, Merion, PA. Since we plan the next gathering date at the end of each gathering, contact the Chapter Contact for the next specific gathering date.

We come together to pray, reflect, dialogue, share our stories and work and we often draw on resources like speakers, articles, books and DVDs to enhance our awareness and understanding of issues related to our call to mission, our global concerns, especially for those who are struggling economically, living under oppression or living with environmental degradation in their communities.

As Maryknoll Affiliates, we live out our Maryknoll identity in our own unique ways, providing nurturing and support to each other in our Chapter. We love to celebrate so on occasion, we share an international-flavored pot luck meal.

Philadelphia Maryknoll Affiliate Gathering, January 15, 2012

The Philadelphia Maryknoll Affiliates gathered on January 15 at St. Malachy’s Rectory in Philadelphia.

We opened with a prayer followed by some sharing and reflection.

Prior to the gathering, Pat Hayes had sent two pieces for reflection and provided a third piece at the meeting. The focus of the reflection pieces was prophetic imagination and the vocational call to be prophetic, as individuals and as a group.

We focused on Walter Brueggemann’s book on prophetic imagination in which he begins with examining the alternative community of Moses as a paradigm for the community built on the foundation of the biblical prophet’s work and ministry. Brueggemann proposes that “the task of prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us.”

The Philadelphia Maryknoll Affiliates gathered in September and October to complete the Experimental Model Evaluation using Appreciative Inquiry.

At the September gathering, we reflected on a passage from Mt 25:1-2, about the wedding attendants. Using a book written by Miriam Therese Winter (published by Orbis) titled eucharist with a small "e", we were introduced to a new way to interpret this story, looking at it from the perspective of how two-thirds of the world would approach it from their experience. According to the author, an "alternative understanding of this story is based on a literal reading of the text, which in itself is ironic...From a justice orientation, the foolish are wise and the wise foolishly follow the ways of the world right up to the very end, eating and drinking and making merry while the poor are kept outside. If this were the heavenly banquet, Jesus would never have barred the door, for whoever returns to him, is always-always-welcome".

Philadelphia Chapter Signs onto Letter to Support Immigrants

The Philadelphia Maryknoll Affiliate Chapter signed onto this letter set forward by the Philadelphia New Sanctuary Movement.  We consulted with the Maryknoll Office of Global Concerns prior to doing so.  This letter seeks to influence city officials in Philadelphia to refrain from renewing the city’s relationship with ICE through the Preliminary Arraignment Reporting System (PARS). This PARS agreement is similar to the “Secure Communities “program and both undermine the confidence and trust that immigrants have in the local police which in turn affects the safety of communities.

The Philadelphia Area Maryknoll Affiliates gathered in January at St. Malachy’s Rectory. We gathered with a prayer provided and lead by Mary Massaro and then we spent some time remembering Anne Weir who made her journey to God shortly after Christmas. Tom and Anne Weir were part of our group from the beginning and we all had many stories to recall their time with us.

The Philadelphia Maryknoll Affiliates met at beautiful St. Malachy's Church rectory in north Philadelphia on Sunday, December 5, 2010. Fred Goddard honored us with his presence.

The meeting was an opportunity for reflection on the Northeast Affiliates Regional Conference on October 9 at Maryknoll, New York. The Philadelphia Affiliates hosted that meeting choosing comprehensive immigration reform as the theme, and asking the question, "What would Jesus do?
