What the Philadelphia Chapter has been doing

The Philadelphia Area Maryknoll Affiliates gathered in January at St. Malachy’s Rectory. We gathered with a prayer provided and lead by Mary Massaro and then we spent some time remembering Anne Weir who made her journey to God shortly after Christmas. Tom and Anne Weir were part of our group from the beginning and we all had many stories to recall their time with us.

We viewed half of the DVD 9500 Liberty and we will view the second half when we gather again on February 20 at St. Malachy’s. “9500 Liberty tells the story of a Virginia county torn apart by a controversial law requiring police to check the immigration status of people suspected of being undocumented. Through gripping footage and a shocking ending, the film reveals what happens when the democratic process gets hijacked by fear and intimidation and reminds us what everyday people can accomplish when they fight back” (from the DVD liner description).

Some members of our group will be participating in an eight part series called Crossing Borders: Migration, Theology, and the Human Journey. It will be held weekly. It is a module of the JustFaith program and is being provided by Mary Kay Flannery, SSJ who is on staff at Justice for Immigrants. This series is an introductory study of many issues surrounding the topic of migration/immigration. The sessions cover the following topics:

  1. The Contemporary Debate and Public Policy
  2. History of Migration
  3. The Bible and Migration
  4. Foundations of Migration-Root Causes
  5. Migration and Catholic Social Teaching
  6. Slavery in America
  7. The Human Face of the Migrant
  8. Eucharist and a Theology of Migration

Crossing Borders was written by Daniel G. Groody, CSC, PhD, and Mary J. Miller, M.A. It provides participants with the chance to find common ground and to discover more about themselves, God and the millions of people who are on the move in very part of the world.

The suggested readings for the series include:

International Migration: A Very Short Introduction by Khalid Koser

A Promised Land, A Perilous Journey: Theological Perspectives on Migration, edited by D. Groody and G. Campese

Globalization, Spirituality and Justice by Daniel Groody

This Flowing Toward Me: A Story of God Arriving in Strangers by Marilyn Lacey, RSM
