C.A.R.E. (Coastal AIDS Resource Effort) in Wilmington, North Carolina, is the apostolate of the Fr. Price Chapter of Maryknoll Affiliates. Our work is centered on advocacy for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
December 1 is a perennial World AIDS Day where we lift up persons who have left the world. Each year we host this spiritually memorable event for clients and loved ones in the area. Some of our monthly activities include works of mercy such as delivering our “Companions Program” on Wednesdays where we deliver donated foods from local food banks, through the Food Pantry Coordinator from Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation of this type also provides opportunities to share prayer and emotional support for people who are shut in, have no transportation, and have very few visitors during the week.
This is our Apostolate at C.A.R.E. Personal visitation allows us to minister in all kinds of ways to people, and to advocate for them within various crises situations they often face, with Social Services, food, funeral arrangements, income problems, health care needs, and spiritual care. Through collaborative efforts, the Affiliates, through C.A.R.E., partner with many churches, and in addition to constant financial support from St. Mary's Catholic Church, is especially helped locally by the United Methodist Church, and gives its thanks.

Father Dennis Moorman, met with some of the Affiliates and some associates (inquiry) at Wrightsville Beach for a small mission talk about his journey, we had a blast with him. Everyone was so moved by his dedication, his commitment and certainly the diversity of his various ministries, it was an honor to host this gathering.

Sr. Virgeen Healey recently visited Wilmington, North Carolina and the Maryknoll Affiliates there.
Sr. Virgeen participated in making prayer boxes with HIV-positive Affiliates, reflecting upon their blessings and in learning forgiveness. Sr. Virgeen has a very out-going "grandmotherliness" about her, which made it easy to talk with her and fun to be with.
We enjoyed hosting Sr. Virgeen's visit with us and hope she'll return soon.

The week before Christmas brings out a plethora of elf-like helpers for the annual Children's Holiday Party held at St. Mary's Catholic Church. For years, C.A.R.E. has sponsored a sit-down turkey dinner for the families; this year C.A.R.E. held a less formal version due to weather problems. Each child received his or her choice of a stuffed animal and also a book or toy. Goodies were enjoyed by the siblings and families enjoyed fellowship with each other. Santa made a grand entrance amidst his many fans and admirers young and old, and a photographer took Santa snapshots.
